James Watson: Experience, leadership and keeping it simple

With a career rooted in greenkeeping and shaped by decades of industry experience, James Watson brings a practical, people-first approach to his role as Area Sales Manager at Agrovista Amenity.

Growing up in a greenkeeping household, James was immersed in the industry from an early age. His father spent 47 years as a course manager, and it wasn’t long before James followed in his footsteps, starting out at just 15 years old at Walton Heath Golf Club.

“It was a fantastic place to begin,” he says. “A prestigious venue with a rich history, and somewhere that really set the standard for me early on.”

From there, James moved to The Wisley Golf Club, where he spent five years developing his skills at one of the country’s most exclusive private members’ clubs. His progression continued with his first Head Greenkeeper role at Cranleigh Golf & Country Club, followed by an opportunity overseas managing a golf course in Majorca.

After returning to the UK, James briefly managed a nine-hole course before making the move into the commercial side of the industry, a decision that would shape the next chapter of his career.

“I spent seven years with Headland Amenity, which gave me a really strong technical foundation,” he explains. “That’s where I completed my FACTS qualification and started to build a much broader understanding of the products and solutions available.”

James then made the transition to Sherriff Amenity, now Agrovista Amenity, where he has remained for the past 16 years.

“It was quite an unusual move at the time,” he says. “Going from a manufacturer to a distributor wasn’t something many people were doing, but it’s certainly worked out for me.”

Today, James leads the South East region, managing a team of eight and overseeing a vast and varied territory spanning from Norfolk across to Hampshire, including London and the surrounding counties.

“It’s a big area, and we’ve got a really strong, enthusiastic team,” he says. “There’s a great mix of experience and youth, and a real drive to push the Agrovista name forward.”

While James maintains a smaller personal portfolio of customers, much of his focus is on supporting and developing his team.

“A lot of my role is about making sure the team has the knowledge, confidence and tools they need,” he explains. “It’s not just about having the answers; it’s about knowing where to find them and how to apply them.”

The diversity of Agrovista’s customer base is something James is particularly passionate about.

“We work with everyone, from top-level football clubs right through to volunteers at local bowls clubs. That breadth is something we’re really proud of, and it’s great to see the team embracing that and feeling confident to engage with all types of customers.”

When it comes to his agronomic approach, James is a firm believer in keeping things straightforward.

“For me, it’s about doing the basics well,” he says. “There’s no need to overcomplicate things. Use the right products, apply them properly, and communicate in a way the customer understands, that’s when you get the best results.”

He’s also quick to point out that flexibility is key.

“With such a diverse customer base, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. You’ve got to adapt and tailor your advice depending on who you’re working with.”

A typical week sees James balancing time between customers, team support, and planning.

“I’ll usually spend a couple of days with customers, a day out with the team, and the rest of the time on preparation and behind-the-scenes work,” he says. “Having a slightly smaller portfolio gives me the flexibility to focus on supporting the wider team, which is important.”

Reflecting on his long-standing career with the business, James believes Agrovista’s evolution in recent years has made it an even stronger place to be.

“The company has changed massively, especially over the past five years,” he says. “We’ve developed into a business that can genuinely meet the needs of any customer.”

“From irrigation parts through to the latest active ingredients, we’ve got the range and the expertise to support the whole industry. That’s what makes it such a good fit for me, we can offer complete solutions, whatever the requirement.”
