With a career shaped by hands-on experience and a clear focus on detail, Peter Holmstrom brings both technical insight and a strong coaching ethos to his role as Area Sales Manager for the West at Agrovista Amenity.
Peter’s journey into the industry began with a change in direction at a young age: “Once I realised I wasn’t going to be a footballer, I needed to find another path,” he says. “I’d been with Bristol Rovers for a number of years, but at 17 I applied to become an apprentice greenkeeper at Newport Golf Club.”
Working under Angus MacLeod, now Course Manager at The Belfry, proved to be a defining chapter.
“I spent ten years there and worked my way up to deputy,” Peter explains. “The biggest thing I took from that time with Angus was attention to detail. Whether it was a branch left on a tee or an untrimmed hole, nothing was overlooked. That mindset has stayed with me ever since and that is thanks to Angus.”
Peter later made the move into the commercial side of the industry, joining Countrywide where he spent eight years selling amenity products and managing a team. He continued that progression with AGS, again balancing team leadership with his own customer base, before the business merged with Agrovista Amenity.
Since January, Peter has taken on the role of Area Sales Manager for the West, overseeing a large and varied region stretching from Worcestershire across Wales and down to Devon and Cornwall.
“It’s a big patch,” he says. “We cover everything from Mid Wales to the South West, with a strong presence across golf and football, but also a wide range of other sectors.”

Supported by a team of six and a depot in Amesbury, Peter’s region serves a diverse customer base, from high-profile sports venues through to estates, caravan parks and local facilities.
“We work with some fantastic sites,” he says. “From football clubs that have won Pitch of the Year awards to Ryder Cup venues and Open qualifying courses. But we also support a broad mix of customers, all with different needs.”
For Peter, understanding those needs starts from the ground up.
“My approach is simple, only prescribe what the soil is telling us,” he explains. “Everything starts with analysis. If you get the foundations right, you can build from there.”
He works closely with customers to develop tailored programmes, balancing agronomy with the desired end result.
“It’s about understanding what the customer wants to achieve,” he says. “Whether that’s rapid growth for a football pitch or a more controlled approach on fine turf, you adapt accordingly. Get the base right, then focus on the finish.”
Peter is also a strong advocate for adding value beyond the sale.
“You cannot just turn up with a product list and expect that to be enough,” he says. “You have to go the extra mile, build relationships and become a trusted part of the customer’s operation.”
Balancing customer demands with team leadership means no two weeks are ever the same.
“I still manage a sizeable portfolio of customers, so a lot of my time is spent supporting them,” he explains. “Alongside that, I am working closely with the team, helping them with pricing, planning and developing their areas.”
While the split can vary, Peter estimates that around 60 percent of his time is spent with customers and 40 percent supporting his team.
“One week can look very different to the next,” he says. “It all depends on where the demand is, but over time I will be able to focus more on supporting the team as accounts transition.”
That support is where Peter feels his strengths lie.
“I really enjoy the coaching side,” he says. “Helping people develop, whether that is through communication, understanding their customers better or improving their technical knowledge.”
It is an approach rooted in the same attention to detail that defined his early career.
“It is about understanding the individual as much as the sale,” he explains. “Knowing your customers, building relationships and not cutting corners. That is what makes the difference.”
Looking ahead, Peter sees both challenges and opportunities for the industry.
“There are pressures, particularly around budgets and rising costs, especially in sectors like golf,” he says. “Technology will also play a bigger role, but it is important that we use it in the right way and continue to offer real value through our expertise.”
For Peter, Agrovista provides the platform to do just that.

“Having worked in both large corporate and smaller independent businesses, this brings the best of both,” he says. “The scale, support and stability of Agrovista, combined with the ability to invest in people and grow. The level of support across the business is excellent, and that gives you confidence for the future. It is a company you can build a long-term career with.”
