Rose Pruning Tips

Early spring

General rule: Prune your roses back to three or four buds

• Climbing roses: train the main branch into the shape that you require. prune side branch shoots to 2 cm.

• Rose bushes: cut the branches down to a length of about 30 cm above the ground to produce the maximum flowers. Plants can be reduced to a height of 10 cm’s though this will limit the amount of flowers.

• Standard roses: prune the branches back to a maximum length of 40 cm above the original graft.

Summer

Prune back damaged branches to five leaf buds and remove any dead heads.

Autumn

Prune your roses back to prevent wind damage but not all the way back as winter frosts may cause some die back.

Roses should be fed three times during the season: Feed in March to stimulate flower bud formation. Feed in May-June to prolong the flowering period and then from July to September to promote an autumn display and provide the resources for the subsequent seasons blooms.
