Mount on a tree, wall or sturdy garden fitting, ideally:
1.5m to 2.5m above the ground
In a spot protected from cats and other predators
Facing east for the morning sun (south east and north east are also suitable)
The box should be left empty as wild birds will bring their nest material into the box.
Nesting is most likely occur April and May. If chicks hatch, you’ll see a flurry of feeding activity by the parent birds. To avoid disturbing them, do not open or inspect the box during the breeding season, as interruption could lead to the abandonment of the nest and young.
Clean between September and February (outside the breeding season)
Remove old nest material and disinfect with a wildlife-safe product
To open for cleaning, lift the brass catch to the upright position and swing the side panel open from the bottom
To maintain its appearance, apply a matching water-based outdoor paint to the slow-seasoned FSC timber annually
