Common swifts prefer to access their nest cavities with an upward swoop during their final approach, particularly in locations where telephone wires or similar obstacles make a horizontal approach potentially hazardous. When leaving the nest, they also drop down into flight to quickly gain speed. With this in mind, the entrance to the box is sited on the underside, near the mounting wall to cater for these preferences. Additionally, below the entrance a small grip ladder provides secure footing for birds when alighting.
As swifts typically nest in colonies, it is advisable to install multiple boxes on different sides of a property, as individual birds often have varying preferences for approach flight paths and nest orientation.
